First Season 2016, Teatro Degollado

After two highly successful appearances with the OFJ, first in 2014 with the Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss and then in 2015´s “Gala Wagner”, acclaimed soprano Amber Wagner returns to the Teatro Degollado stage with more of her signature German repertoire.  Chosen by Opera News as …”one of twenty-five artists poised to break out and become a major force in classical music…”, Amber will regale us on this occasion with songs by Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss as well as a glimpse of heaven in the Mahler Fourth Symphony.

In composing his Fourth Symphony, Gustav Mahler had to come up with three movements which would lead up to a pre-existing finale, written seven years earlier—a simple, pastoral song for soprano which offers us an innocent vision of paradise.  This symphony, one of the composer’s most joyous, is unique among his works on account of his treatment of the first three movements:  a gradual reduction in complexity which serves to prepare us for the sublime conclusion:  the fourth movement for soprano and orchestra entitled “Das Himmlische Leben” (The Heavenly Life), which will be sung by our guest, Amber Wagner, with all of the profound interpretative force that has made her famous.
