Robert Schumann composed the A minor Piano Concerto with his wife in mind.  Clara was one of the greatest virtuoso pianists of her time, and just as in the cases of Liszt and Thalberg, her fame was assured by her talent and her virtuoso technique.  Her husband, however, did not applaud the era´s tendency to favor empty technical bravura.  The very qualities that Robert elevated to importance in his concerto were criticized at its première; however, they are the selfsame qualities that enable us to appreciate the work in our own time as a jewel of the romantic piano repertoire:  a perfectly balanced dialogue between soloist and orchestra, a unique individual style, and an irresistible lyricism.

Technical brilliance, profound musicality, a playful virtuosity and intense sensitivity have made Claire Huangci one of the most important contemporary interpreters of the romantic repertoire, so we can expect a grand performance in this concert, one in which the OFJ will also interpret the Ninth Symphony of Franz Schubert.  About the composer, Robert Schumann commented: “Where other people keep diaries in which they record their momentary feelings, etc., Schubert simply kept sheets of music by him and confided his changing moods to them; and his soul being steeped in music, he put down notes when another man would resort to words.”
-- Robert Schumann, letter to to Friedrich Wieck, 1829; quoted in Gal, The Musician´s World (1965)
