On January 30th and February 1st, the OFJ welcomes one of Japan`s most distinguished orchestral conductors of our time, Seikyo Kim, who currently directs the Kanagawa Philharmonic in Yokohama.  Under the spell of the adept young Maestro’s baton, we will experience some of the most glorious music ever written on the British Isles.

We begin our program with music of one of the twentieth century’s most outstanding symphonic composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams.  In 1909, he wrote incidental music for a theatrical production of The Wasps by ancient Greek dramatist Aristophanes at Trinity College, Cambridge.  On this occasion, we will listen to this drama’s delightful, sparkling overture. Next, we turn our attention to the extraordinary compositional genius of Edward Elgar, whose series of five military marches entitled Pomp andCircumstance includes one of the most famous marches of all time, the “No. 1” which, after its 1901 première, was readapted for chorus and orchestra and performed in that version at the coronation of King Edward VII.  Our public is henceforth invited to enjoy a "Royal" treat in these upcoming concerts…

…Onward! to the sights, sounds and aroma of colorful Scottish folklore with German composer Max Bruch`s Scottish Fantasy, Op 46, for violin and orchestra, a favorite of the present-day British public, whose protagonist will be the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius instrument wielded by violinist Geza Hosszu-Legocky. 28-year old, Swiss-born Hosszu-Legocky was a pupil of renowned Paganini specialist Ruggiero Ricci, among other important luminaries of the violin world.

The program also includes the well-known Colonel Bogey March by British military bandmaster Frederick Ricketts, who wrote many marches under the pseudonym Kenneth J. Alford.  Written in 1914, this march attained great popularity during World Wars I and II. We then conclude with Sir Edward Elgar’s splendid Enigma Variations, in which the composer paints a musical portrait of each of his close friends:  the quintessence of British music.
