On the 24th and 26th of April, our OFJ season reaches its culmination in a fascinating program in which the orchestra itself is our soloist, displaying virtuosity in each of its sections and featuring each of its members.  To this end, we will delight in listening to the complete “Daphnis and Chloe”, Maurice Ravel’s choreographic symphonic work.  As famed poet and communicator José María Álvarez affirmed, “Without a doubt, Daphnis and Chloe is one of the most splendid works ever conceived, displaying true genius, maximum beauty and architectonic perfection.”

The idea for the work originated with Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev, who, as director of the Ballets Russes in Paris, commissioned Ravel to compose a ballet inspired by the Greek poet  Longo’s famous pastoral novel.  Daphnis and Chloe utilizes the orchestra as a large palette with impressive washes of color, and includes an offstage chorus which adds its own unique contribution.

The work premiered in Paris on June 8th, 1912 in the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris (just weeks after the première of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring) with a “dream team” of artists (to use modern sports jargon) participating:  Diaghilev in charge, music by Ravel, choreography by Fokine, scenic and costume design by León Bakst, musical direction by Pierre Monteux, and the principal roles danced by Vaslav Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina…

The Jalisco State Choir will be on hand to lend its considerable talents to the interpretation.

Prior to flooding  the Teatro Degollado with this work’s wash of orchestral color, the OFJ will interpret the Symphony on a French Mountain Air, op.25 by Ravel’s compatriot, Vincent D’Indy.  An atmospheric work, replete with the colors and flavors of French folklore, this infrequently performed gem will feature a young but already renowned French pianist, Olivier Chauzu.
