First Season 2017

The last program of the Orchestra Season is a prelude to the celebration of Holy Week:  On Thursday the 23rd and Sunday the 26th of March, music inspired by various episodes of the Bible will be offered for the listeners’ delight.

The program opens with the emblematic Overture to the opera “Nabucco” by Giuseppe Verdi, which narrates the episode in which the Jews were captured by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.  Two selections of film music follow:  the Suite from Ben-Hur, by Miklós Rósza, and the Elmer Bernstein Prelude to The Ten Commandments.  Another Old Testament story to be presented is that of Samson and Delilah, in the form of the orgiastic Bacchanale  from the French opera on this subject by composer Camille Saint-Saëns. OFJ Flautist Katherine Rivas will offer her interpretation of the 1902  Concertino for flute in D major by French composer Cécile Chaminade.
