First Orchestra Season, 2018

Sergei Rachmaninov is already well-known for his Piano Concertos and for having been one of the great piano soloists of the twentieth century.  However, in this Cycle, the OFJ intends to explore another facet of composer Rachmaninov, the symphonist, with his frankly romantic musical language, exceptional during an era which featured an abundance of breaking away from 19th-century sonorous traditions.

The OFJ opens this Cycle with the Rachmaninov Symphony No.2, first premiered in 1908 and considered to be one of Russia´s most important symphonic monuments prior to the October Revolution. The symphonic work El guerrero águila y el guerrero tigre (The  Eagle Warrior and the Tiger Warrior), based on the children´s tale with the same name by Heriberto Frías, will round out the program, along with the Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra by Estonian composer Eduard Tubin, interpreted by the OFJs own Oscar Luque, principal contrabass.

These concerts will take place on the 8th and 11th of February.
