Second Orchestra Season 2018, Teatro Degollado

This program flaunts an exotic timbral palette which reaches us from the far latitudes, developed during the second half of the 19th century by various Russian composers. We open with a selection of short pieces from the ballet Gayaneh by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturián, which narrates a story about a deeply patriotic woman; one of the most famous sections from this ballet is the well-known Sabre Dance.

Next follows the Concerto for trumpet and orchestra by another Armenian composer: Alexander Arutunián, to be interpreted by João Vilão, principal trumpet in our orchestra.

The OFJ will also present Fantasía orientale originally written for piano by Mily Balákirev in 1869: Islamey. The work is based on popular themes heard by the author on a visit to the Caucasus Mountains, and the orchestral version that will be presented in these concerts was realized by Sergei Liapunov.the Concerto for trumpet and orchestra by another Armenian composer: Alexander Arutunián, to be interpreted by João Vilão, principal trumpet in our orchestra.

The golden cockerel is the final work of Russian composer Nikolai Rimski-Kórsakov. Its composition was surrounded by controversy: various reports denounced the composer as a subversive, accusing him of making a farce of the Tsar. The story is based on a tale by Pushkin, in which an astronomer offers a surprising gift to King Dodón: a magical golden rooster which is capable of emitting a special sound to warn of any sign of approaching danger (especially an attack by a neighboring country). On this occasion, the OFJ will perform a Suite containing some of the most exquisite orchestral portions of this opera, whose lavish color and exoticism will be on display in these concerts.

The OFJ will be conducted by its Music Director, Maestro Marco Parisotto, in this program which will be presented on the 7th and 10th of June.
