Our fifth program begins with the music of an accomplished female composer of her times, Fanny Mendelssohn, whose Overture in C demonstrates the same elegance and attention to detail as the works of her illustrious brother Felix.  The Concerto for horn and orchestra No. 1 by Richard Strauss reminds us that his father, to whom he dedicated the work, was a magnificent hornist, and Wagner`s “Good Friday Spell” from his music drama Parsifal introduces us to an ethereal world of mysticism, spiritual fervor, atonement, and redemption.  In contrast, we finalize this concert with the stark, powerful musical language used by Paul Hindemith in Mathis der Maler, in which the composer frames his musical portrait of a notable medieval artist.
