“Program music” is music which aurally tells a story and/or paints a picture. “La España de Cervantes” (Cervantes´ Spain) contains three excellent examples: the symphonic poem “Don Quixote”, based on Miguel de Cervantes´ well-known work, the Concierto de Aranjuez, which provides a musical description of the gardens of the Royal Palace bearing the same name, and the ballet suites from “El Sombrero de Tres Picos” (Three-Cornered Hat) are derived from a folk tale filled with adventures, misunderstandings, and comical moments.
There are those connoisseurs who would attest that one who doesn´t know the story behind a work of program music misses half the fun; however, in this case, the music offered in “La España de Cervantes” is so ingenious that it truly does stand on its own, creating a rich sonic experience.
