First Orchestra Season 2018
Rachmaninov composed his Symphony No. 1 in 1895 with the idea of presenting his first important symphonic work. Unfortunately, the premiere was an absolute disaster on account of lack of rehearsal and other substandard conditions. The resulting public disapproval provoked a severe depression for Rachmaninov, a depression that he was only able to overcome after various sessions of hypnosis. Today, this same Symphony No. 1 is an important part of the symphonic repertoire; it captures all of Rachmaninov´s emotional dynamism and shows him to be a true master of orchestration as well.
In addition to the Symphony No. 1 of Rachmaninov, these concerts by the OFJ feature the participation of young Russian pianist Daniel Kharitonov, Bronze Medal winner in the 15th International Tchaikovsky Competition, who will offer his interpretation of the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 by Ludwig van Beethoven. OFJ Music Director Marco Parisotto conducts this program on the 18th of February.
