First Orchestra Season 2018
The Rachmaninov Symphonic Cycle continues on the 15th and 18th of March with his Symphony No. 3, music which draws on the composer´s memories of his lost homeland and a distant past, reflected in melancholy melodies. The work was dedicated to the Philadelphia Orchestra, which premiered it under Music Director Leopold Stokowski in 1936.
This same program will also feature the Sinfonía No. 2 Homenaje a Posadas by Mexican composer Armando Luna. Premiered in 2011, this Symphony found its inspiration in five engravings by José Guadalupe Posada, and in that artist´s obsession with Death (a recurrent theme for Rachmaninov, as well). Also on the program will be OFJ Principal Second Violinist Maxwell Pardo´s interpretation, along with the orchestra, of Fratres, a work by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, in the version he wrote for violin, strings and percussion.
