The Moldau

In 1874, Bedrich Smetana wished to express nationalist ideals, and he began to create a series of symphonic poems with the intent of transmitting the spirit of his native Bohemia through these symphonic portraits. He composed six of these works and published them under the name “Ma Vlast” (My Country) They were his final compositions. The second symphonic poem of the series is The Moldau, and it represents the river of the same name which passes through Prague on its way to its confluence with the river Elbe.

Concierto Aranjuez

Written in early 1939 in París, this concerto depicts the gardens of the Royal Palace  of Aranjuez, springtime residence of Spanish king Philip II during the second half of the sixteenth century. The work aims to transport the listener to another place and time in which he perceives the sounds of nature. This concerto reveals the notable influence of Al-Ándalus, the medieval Muslim state, in Spanish art and culture.

Joaquín Rodrigo described the last movement of this piece as capturing the fragance of magnolias, the singing of birds and the rushing wáter of the fountains in the gardens of Aranjuez.

Magnificat

“…First movement starts off really with a fanfare, just an announcement of what kind of a work it’s going to be.  That gets us going! –and I think the audience should be able to tell immediately that this is going to be a joyful work…”-John Rutter

The Magníficat is a canticle which derives from the gospel according to Luke and consists of the words spoken by the Virgin Mary on the occasion of her visit to her cousin Elizabeth. The name of the canticle is taken from its first Latin phrase:  Magnificat anima mea Dominum.
