Synopsis, Program 1
The Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco extends a heartfelt welcome to the public in the gorgeous Teatro Degollado, as we present our First Program of the Third Season, 2021.
We begin with the Symphony No. 31 “Paris” by WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (1756-1791). Considered to be his first “mature” symphony, it was written and premiered in Paris in 1778 when the composer was 22 years old. Its sparklingly brilliant themes were influenced by the style of the Mannheim orchestra, some of whose members were present in Paris when Mozart arrived (along with his mother). Another Mannheim influence is the use of clarinets in this symphony, a first for the young Mozart. Unlike most symphonies of the Classic era, it only contains three movements: 1) Allegro assai, replete with brilliant D major scale motifs (à la Mannheim); 2) Andantino, characterized by simple but beautiful melodies; 3) an effervescent finale, Allegro, in D major.
Our evening concert continues (and closes) with the Serenade No. 1, Op. 11, by JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833-1897), a work of extraordinary symphonic quality that showcases, in particular, our orchestra´s excellent horn and clarinet sections. Written in 1858, it was the first orchestral work by Brahms to be published. The Serenade´s six movements reflect the neoclassical style that Brahms adopted during his twenties, inspired by the delicious Divertimenti and other wind chamber music by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and others, while remaining true to the majesty and romantic sensibility that are the hallmarks of Brahms´ personal style.
