In confirmation of the old adage that sometimes amazingly good things come in surprisingly small packages, the first piece we encounter on this program is the Nonet by mid-nineteenth century French composer Louise Farrenc, who was able to weave all the emotions of a complete symphony into a compact, nine-musician framework. The four movements of this work: 1) Adagio-Allegro; 2) Andante con moto; 3) Scherzo. Vivace; and 4) Adagio – Allegro, attest to the genius of their author, who fought throughout her life to compose music, to be taken seriously as a composer (she was also a virtuoso pianist and a renowned professor of piano but not permitted to teach composition at the Paris Conservatoire) and to receive the compensation that her work merited. The star of this show is our own OFJ Concertmistress Angélica Olivo, as befits a nineteenth-century masterpiece by a female composer…with excellent writing for the violin and some noteworthy cadenzas. Enjoy!
Next, five excellent brass musicians take the stage , and the rest of the program is an eclectic combination of works for brass quintet. From the heroic A Western Fanfare by Eric Ewazen, to the world premiere Arrebato by Albert Guinovart (Tango, anyone?) to the hilarious Moldavia made famous by Mnozil Brass and arranged by Yael Fiuza and ending on a jazzy theme, Blue by Thomas Gansch, arranged by the OFJ´s very own Associate Principal hornist, Marcos Cruz, these works showcase the amazing talents of the brass players of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco.
