“We Give Books”,
The OFJ announces an important international event which takes place this Friday, November 1st, 2013, at 3:00 PM in the Teatro Degollado:
Over the past five years, the PEARSON FOUNDATION and the Secretaría de Cultura of the Jalisco State Government have worked together to make possible "We Give Books", a program whose fundamental objective is to promote reading among primary school students in the Guadalajara metro area.
In this sixth edition of "We Give Books", the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco joins other institutions in support of this program, in which the PEARSON foundation is donating 20,000 books, by sponsoring this year's "We Give Books" event. For the event, 600 students will be invited to the Teatro Degollado, where they will receive bilingual (Spanish and English) books and read them together.
The books to be donated include “Otis”, by Loren Long, “Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad" by David Soman and Jacky Davis, and “The Wizard of Oz", among others. In the ceremony, these books will be symbolically given to representatives of the Secretaría de Educación. All are in both English and Spanish.
In its previous five editions, this program has given out a total of 50,000 books to benefit pupils from the first through fourth grades of elementary school, with the essential support of the Secretaría de Educación Jalisco, in an event in which the student invitees read the texts together and a great number of books are then distributed to various schools in the metropolitan area.
The obvious social benefits of such a program and the necessity for various public institutions to work together in a coordinated fashion inspired the OFJ to join this worthy cause in promotion of culture and education.
We are convinced that the public shares our interest in this outreach campaign in favor of reading, recognizes the necessity of consciousness-raising with regard to the importance of early childhood learning, and will be pleased to participate and contribute to the event's success.
