Sergei PROKOFIEV, Romeo and Juliet

The creation of this ballet took place under challenging circumstances.  The work had been commissioned by Leningrad`s Kírov Theater in 1934, but when Prokófiev proposed that the theme be Romeo and Juliet, the theater rejected it.

Prokofiev worked through 1936, extracting two symphonic suites in seven movements, as well as a transcription for piano, from the ballet.  In 1946 a third suite was written.

The ballet itself was finally performed in 1938 in Brno, Czechoslovakia, where it was warmly received.  This success was followed by the Russian première at the Kirov Ballet (1940), and a 1946 Bolshoi Ballet première.

This is one of the composer`s best-appreciated works on account of its soaring melodic inspiration, great rhythmic variety and the sheer memorability of its principal themes.

The ballet "Romeo and Juliet" will be presented by the Joven Ballet de Jalisco and its Artistic Director, Dariusz Blajer.

Laura Boltri and Alejandra García will alternate in the role of Juliet, and approximately 30 dancers will take the stage for the event.
