On February 13th and 15th, the OFJ plans to commemorate the Festival of the Founding of Guadalajara with renowned flautist Elena Durán, pupil of the brilliant James Galway--the perfect choice to uplift us with the best of Mexican popular music, elevated to symphonic levels. The program, entitled Fiesta Mexicana, includes various arrangements for flute and orchestra (by composers Alexis Aranda, Eugenio Toussaint, Luis Zepeda and Edgar Ibarra) of well-known and loved songs that hail from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.  Along with Ms. Durán, a major protagonist onstage will be composer and songwriter Manuel Esperón, represented in his songs “Amorcito corazón”, “Cocula”, “A la orilla del mar”, “Blues Maldad” and “¡Ay Jalisco, no te rajes!”, as well as his orchestral work México 1910. Other songs which share a place of honor onstage in this gala event are “El jinete”, by José Alfredo Jiménez, “Bésame mucho”, by Consuelo Velázquez, “Zacatecas”, by Genaro Fernández, “Duerme”, by Miguel Prado, traditional favorite “Tilingo lingo”, and, to provide a final flourish to these festivities, “Guadalajara” by  Pepe Guízar.

Another important element will be the music of Mexican composer Samuel Zyman, whose works Encuentros (written to represent Mexico at Expo Seville ’92) and Fantasia for Flute and Orchestra with Maestra Durán as soloist, will be performed at these concerts.

The OFJ welcomes Maestro Ramón Shade, Artistic Director of the Camerata de Coahuila, as guest conductor.
